Geocache Description:

Long Hike with beautiful views of the Stellenbosch area, False Bay, Table Bay, West Coast, Swartland and Franchoek areas!

Leopard hide is a cache which is truly situated in a beautiful location. It has been placed along the Stellenbosch Mountain Hiking Trail near the third trig beacon at the summit. Most people who have hiked along this trail are familiar with the first beacon (yes those people are mostly students!), some of the more enthusiastic the second beacon and very few harde manne/vroue the third, fourth and all that follow. It should be noted that the trail starts on the University Sport Grounds (33°56'46.13"S  , 18°52'51.61"E) and by the time you have hiked passed the second beacon the trail is in the Hottentots Holland Nature reserve! By then the world seems small and far beneath your feet and there are some beautiful views to be enjoyed!  Take note that you should be keen for a 5-8h hike and obviously you should prepare accordingly.

Some things to look out for along the trail is Manganese mineralization along fracture zones (Fault-Breccia) and quartz (crystal) bearing fracture planes (Joints). You might find a nice specimen or two. Hyrax droppings are the most common droppings encountered, but be sure to look out for tracks and signs left by the leopard, caracal, steenbok, duiker and klipspringer, as they are known to still roam in these mountain ranges.

Enjoy!
