Geocache Description:

This Wherigo geocache is located in historic Guyandotte, a community in the east end of Huntington, WV.  Completing this Wherigo geocache is best accomplished on foot although it can easily be done by car.  Take some time to enjoy all of the historic sites in Guyandotte.

Guyandotte is situated at the juncture of the Ohio and Guyandotte Rivers and was an important area for the indigenous people of the Ohio Valley long before settlement by Europeans.

Most believe that the first white settlement in Guyandotte was around 1609 and the town was officially established in 1810 as Guyandotte, Virginia.  During the American Civil War, the town was burned by Union troops in November 1861 as the Confederate forces were leaving town.  This is reputedly in retaliation for the aid that the residents of Guyandotte had given to the Confederates in the area.

When Collis P. Huntington made nearby Holderby’s Landing a major stop in his C & O Railway, Guyandotte experienced growth from the expansion of Huntington.

Now a quiet residential neighborhood of Huntington, WV, Guyandotte offers visitors a glimpse back to the 1800s in the remaining homes and businesses.  The annual Guyandotte Civil War Days is a fun festival that brings visitors and reinactors from all over the country.

This Wherigo geocache does not take visitors to all of the historic stops in Guyandotte but gives a good overview of some of the highlights.  Completing the steps of the cache should take less than an hour on foot which is easier than by car.  All of the locations are 100% handicap accessible.

This is my first Wherigo so please contact me if there is something that doesn’t work right for you.  I have successfully completed the cartridge with a Garmin Oregon and an Apple iPad.

The cartridge can be downloaded at http://goo.gl/dNOkts or by going to Wherigo.com and searching on the zip code 25702. The link for the "related page" at the top of this cache listing also links to the Wherigo cartridge.
