Geocache Description:

To get the co-ordinates for this cache, you have to play a virtual game in the physical world.
You are Pacman, chomping power pills and dodging virtual ghosts in a real-world maze!

THIS GAME MAY INVOLVE SUDDEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
IF YOU'RE NOT PREPARED FOR THAT, DON'T DO THIS CACHE!

All you need to do is load this wherigo cartridge and head to Leach-Wood Gardens in Newtown to play the game. You'll be prompted on-screen with all the information you need.
If you prefer more details, then the rest of these cache notes are for you.

Basic "Pacman 3D" Game Instructions :
The game layout takes place at the Leach-Wood Gardens in Newtown, Geelong.
These instructions are included in the cartridge. They're listed here just so that you know what to expect:
  1. The aim of the game is to collect at least 8 power pills and then make it into the finish pod before the ghosts get you.
  2. There are 10 power pills in total, but you only need to find 8 of them. These power pills (in the form of fruits and tokens) are collected automatically whenever you get near special structures such as benches, tanks, plaques, posts, steps between pines, water features and bridges.
Most - but not all - of these special structures are power pill locations. Just like in the original arcade games, you have to discover them yourself.
  3. Once you've collected 8 power pills, locate the square finish pod near the centre of the maze. You have to figure out where it is, but it should be pretty obvious when you've walked around the gardens for a few minutes. Once you go into the pod, the game will be completed and you will be given the co-ordinates for GZ.
  4. Four ghosts (Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde) will chase you at random while you're wandering around the maze. When you encounter a ghost, continue walking away very quickly - or run! Music plays for the 5 seconds that the ghost chases you - and in that time, you must get away from the ghost by about 10 metres.
The ghost that is chasing you will be displayed on your screen while you are being chased - and only while you are being chased. The ghost will disappear from your screen as soon as you have outwalked or outrun him. Quite simply, if there is no ghost on your screen, you can stop and relax.
If a ghost catches you, you lose a life.
By the way, Blinky (the red one) is a little slow, but Clyde (the orange one) is particularly mean and fast.
  5. It is GAME OVER if you lose a total of 5 lives, or if you take longer than 20 minutes to complete the game.

Playing the Game
  • This attached layout of the Leach-Wood Gardens gives you an idea of the footpaths in the playing area. You don't need to know this layout to play the game - you can just wander around there.
  • As with any arcade game, there is a possibility that you may not finish it on your first attempt.
  • Whenever you hear the Pacman "waka-waka-waka...waka-waka-waka" chomping sounds, it means that ghosts are active in the area. They can pounce anytime.
  • You can take your time when moving around and collecting power pills. Give your smartphone GPSr time to settle as it will lead to improved GPS accuracy (within +/- 5 metres). But when the ghosts come for you, don't hang around - move or run as fast as you can!
  • Remember that this is a GPS-based game - although much leniency has been built in, it still relies on you having a reasonable GPS accuracy. A fluctuation of 20 to 100 metres will obviously lead to unpredictable results - if this happens, wait a while before continuing.
  • It's a short timer-based game, so the save function will intentionally not work properly to avoid cheating. Officially, this particular cartridge will not support the restart of games saved during the timed phase. You're welcome to save at the end of a successful timed game, if you want to keep the completion code and GZ co-ordinates in your cartridge inventory.
  • Although there is a 20-minute time limit, an average finish should take about 10 to 15 minutes.
Device Compatibility
A smartphone is recommended.
Please note that this cartridge has a very large number of active zones, which means your playing device requires some processing power. The older Garmin GPSrs which supported wherigo had small-capacity processors which will not handle this particular cartridge. Smartphones are thus highly recommended when playing this game, as they all have much more advanced processors and are multimedia-capable.

Edit 2014/08/24 - Version 2 published, with just the time limit changed (reduced to 20 minutes).
