Geocache Description:

This is a small container hidden near little a monument next to a blowhole.

At the coordinates you’ll be right next to Poll na Seantoine (hole of the ancient fire) a large ‘blowhole’ with a wee memorial next to it.

When I first hid this there was just a simple plaque here beside the fenced off hole, then a rumour started about this site becoming one of the Signature Discovery Points along the newly created Wild Atlantic Way.....

The result is a new ‘Spirit of Place’ installation called ‘The Crossing’, consisting of a raised embankment around the blowhole creating shelter from the winds which from a distance makes it look like a ring fort. The edge of the blowhole has a new stainless steel fluted barrier. At the southern end there is a glass viewing area with a cut stone shelter which has lots of information panels explaining the legends associated with this headland and a mention of the folks who created and built this installation. They did a pretty fine job in a short space of time.

The plaque in English, French and Irish is dedicated to 30 rebels from the 1798 uprising, they climbed down here to hide from the redcoats as they went about hunting down and killing anyone suspected of taking part in the rebellion. They all drowned as the tide came in.

The plaque reads "To the memory of the people of Knockaun and Killeen who lost their lives here in Poll na Seantoine in the aftermath of the rebellion of 1798".

The hole gets its name again from local folklore, this time St Patrick blessed a rock and threw it into Crom Duff’s fire causing it to create a huge hole. Or for a more plausible answer try the nearby Earthcache.

Please rehide and Reseal the container properly, it can get wet here! also replace exactly as you found. Thanks.
