Geocache Description:

The Valley Ruin, another cache by Cankid! This cache will take you to the site of The Valley homestead, built by Thomas Gribble. Please note the proximity of this cache to the school so please only attempt it OUTSIDE school hours. It is NOT located within the school boundries but on a separate block.

Enjoy!

The homestead, constructed by Thomas Gribble in the time around 1860s-90s, is comprised of multiple structure, set out in a square formation. Only remnants of three of these structures remain, from the stone slab hut, the stone house and the pisé section. Archaeological survey has revealed that the stone slab hut was built first, during the 1860's, then followed by the pisé section, constructed between 1874 and 1878, and finally the stone house, built in 1887.

While is is hard to spot some parts of the stone slab, the most predominant feature of the site is the ruins of the stone house. In 1976, the height of the homestead was halved and rock was transported to St Ninian's Church in Lyneham. The walls are slowly degrading as periwinkle eats away at the mortar, loosening the stones. The homestead consisted of four bedrooms and a sitting room, with a loft and timber veranda.

The other predominant feature on the site is the remnant of the pisé section. It is located on the southern end of the site and is visible as a grey rock formation. This style of building was brought to the ACT by Eusibo Ponsey and Rupelo Rodriques in the 1870's. The structure is one of the oldest in the ACT. It is thought that Ponsey and Rodriques built the pisé sections at the Tuggeranong Homestead and Rose Cottage.

From the cache, you should be able to get a good view of the structures. Please try to avoid attempting this one during school hours (8am-4pm) as it will be an EXTREMELY high-muggle zone. The schoolkids to pay visits to the site so please re-hide the cache very well.
