Geocache Description:

Salem Cemetery Est. 1839 is a mystery.. to me. Some locals call this tiny, side of the road cemetery the 'yellow fever cemetery'. It was established in 1839, years before the epidemic of 1878.

No need to enter the cemetery and no night cache due to close proximity of muggle homes. You are looking for a small black decon cache containing a log and room for swag (byop). FTF receives an unactivated travelbug!

I googled and searched, no information except a small list of the deceased of which most were born and died in the 1800s. Some locals call it the 'yellow fever cemetery' but was established 50 years prior to the epidemic of 1878. The yellow fever epidemic in Mississippi was a monster; attacking in the summer 1878 almost without warning, infecting most and killing many. A description of Grenada in "Mississippi Valley's Great Yellow Fever Epidemic" indicated how serious the situation was: "The heavy mortality of the epidemic, the suddenness of its onset, and the bomb-like effect on an astonished community focused national attention on this obscure country town for a few weeks in August (1878)."
