Geocache Description:

Well, what have we here. Well, in due time you will find out. Those who know me well will know I am a mariner at heart but I also love aircraft, airports, buses, helicopters and even like to watch a train rumble by from time to time. What have we here? Well here we have U 505, a view of the Thames River, which also is often ignored and does not get the credit it deserves. What do we have here. Well, here we have U 505. Do I need to say more?

<p>

Welcome to U 505. What is U 505? Well, U 505 fits into my transportation series of geocache hides, as well as my aviation series of cache hides and my marine series of caches and well, if I get my way, any series of caches that I wish to include this U 505 geocache hide.

Hopefully you will be able to enjoy this little outing. The cache should be easy to locate as I intend my finds to be enjoyable for the entire family. Placed on a cold, windy day. Nice wide shoulders along the road so parking to seek the cache should not be too difficult. A fair bit of traffic on the road though so do look before jumping out and keep an eye on the children. Please keep your seatbelts fastened and do not open any doors before the geomobile has come to a complete stop. Welcome to U 505 which as I was verifying coordinates I seemed to recall building a model of a submarine with the number 505 when I was a young modeler. Yes, indeed, I did build such a model. U 505 was a part of the German U Boat fleet. She played a role in the Atlantic and was captured on June 4, 1944, southeast of Trinidad. Today she is housed in a museum in Chicago and is the only captured German submarine on display in the U.S.A. U 505 is also on the National Register of Historic Places.What else is U 505? Well for the purpose of this particular location U 505 is a radio beacon forming part of the navigation system used by aircraft and in particular is a guide to a particular position used on landing approaches to Runway 33 at London's airport a few miles northwest of here. A Morse Code 'U' is transmitted and aircraft home on the beacon when visibility is not good and fly towards the runway or hold on the beacon as required when making their approach.I hope you have learned something about a small piece of aviation and a bit about World War 2 naval history as well.
