You may want snowshoes if the snow is deep, but it's not far off a well packed snowmobile trail and you can park nearby.
LP4A is a snowmobile trail along State Route 30 south of Speculator. This cache is hidden near a section that runs betreen Route 30 and Downey Ave, which is the old state road.
Until 2013, most of LP4 was a 'boondocking" trail that most snowmobilers avoided because it was narrow, required technical riding, and provided plenty of opportunities for the average machine and rider to get big time stuck. On the other hand, I rode it every chance I got, especially if no one else had been on it in a long time.
LP4A provides a great way to get quickly bewteen from Speculator and the north end of old Route 30, and now also the new "GiIlmantown Trail" to Wells. It also provides an alternate way to get to the trails in the Speculator Tree Farm such as Cave Hill Road and Fly Creek Road which start on old 30.
So this year LP4A has been improved so that it can be groomed, and it is now an easy trail to ride. A free snowmobile trail map is available at all local businesses and from the Adirondacks Speculator Region Chamber of Commerce.
