Geocache Description:

Kayak/boat cache on Homestead dam. Waypoint is the recommended public park with parking facilities- note that all other edges of the dam are in gated suburbs.

You will need a boat to access this cache. Note that powerboats are forbidden on Homestead Lake. Please respect the right of way of sailing boats during regattas. Waypoint has recommended parking location

Homestead Lake was formed as a result of damming a small seasonal watercourse, the Blesbokspruit, in the late 19th century. Water pumped from ERPM dam filled this dam and the next three dams along the Blesbokspruit (Middle, Civic and Kleinfontein dams).

Today the lake is actively used by fishermen, the East Rand Kayak Club, Benoni Sailing Club, and Scouts South Africa. Over 200 species of bird have been observed here, including many rare waterfowl and raptors. Cormorants sun themselves at GZ in the mornings.

The cache itself is a preform attached to a buoy moored in the dam. Waypoint shows the best publically accessible position to park and launch from.
