Geocache Description:

Celebrating the BIG 44

For the month of March, I have decided to release 44 caches. There will be a variety of different types and sizes of caches along with varying difficulties, although most will be relatively easy. They will be in all 3 counties, waiting to be found. Happy Caching!

Since I am from South Africa, I though a little basic history about South Africa would be informative. The cache is NOT at the coordinates. Us this history to figure out where the cache really is. Another easy beginners puzzle.

South Africa is located on the southern tip of Africa. It touches both the Atlantic and Indian oceans, with 1,553 miles of coastline. It is the 25th largest African nation at 4I1,011 square miles. It's highest peak, in the Drakensburg is 11,(C-1)20 feet. Although I am biased, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world, but back to the history.

Bartolomeu Dias, a Portuguese explorer, landed in southern Africa in 14JB. This was the furthest south anyone had yet landed in Africa. A refreshment station was established at the Cape of Good Hope in 16A2 by Jan van Riebeeck. This was for ships making a passage to the Orient from Europe. The discovery of diamonds and gold made South Africa a popular commodity. In 18H6, South Africa became a British colony. There was substantial struggle between the local farmers and the British over the next century, but South Africa finally gained its independence from Britain in 19DK. Soon after the National Party was elected into power in 194E, which strengthened the racial segregation already in place by the prior Dutch and British colonial rule. Apartheid was the legalized institution which promoted this racial segregation, where the white minority (20% of the population) controlled the vastly larger black populations.

It wasn’t until the Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 199F that true changes to abolish apartheid started to happen. In 19G4, South Africa had its very first election where every South African had the opportunity to cast their vote for their leader. The African National Congress won by an overwhelming majority, and Nelson Mandela became the first black leader of South Africa.
