La'iku (pronounced Laa-eee-coo) is a Hawaiian word meaning "a great calm". This is a tranquil place amidst the development of hotels and shopping areas.
The anchialine ponds near the cache were once filled with tiny red shrimp called "'opae 'ula". Today, none are to be found because of dredging and collectors of live ornaments.
There are two ways to get there. You can take an easy walk down to the beach through the anchialine ponds starting at the parking lot at the waypoint provided. Another option is to hike along the coral beach trail between Anaeho'omalu Bay (Waikoloa Marriott) and Waiulua Bay (Hilton Waikoloa). The cache is between those two trail access points. Congratulations to Runbeak for FTF!!
PLEASE OBEY POSTED SIGNS and do not go in or near the pond itself, there is no need to do so. The cache is a safe distance away from the pond.
