The Birkhead Mountains Wilderness is at the very north end of Uwharrie. It features rolling hills, terrain changes, and streams. All camping areas in Birkhead are primitive. This primitive nature is what this event is all about.
If anyone would like to join me in setting up camp before the event, please meet in the Tot Hill parking lot on Saturday the 12th at 3:30PM. Our target is the campsite at the listed event coordinates. If the campsite is occupied (the wilderness area is on a first-come, first served basis), we will scout around for another appropriate place to camp. The event page will receive an announcement if this is the case. This wilderness area has really good cell phone coverage and even gets 3G, so at least you won't be roughing that part of the trip.
If you'd like to arrive at the event early and camp, I'll start setting up camp at the chosen area at around 6PM. We can discuss and practice bushcrafting, play some games, watch the stars, and eat supper while we wait for the event time. We'll welcome those who show up for the event at 1AM and cook treats around the campfire and show some of the bushcrafting items we made.
If you choose to camp, this event will challenge your backpack packing skills. Do you really need that item enough to hike it more than three miles out to the campsite? How much water should you pack? What food would be good to carry out? Is your tent light enough or should you bring a hammock? What about sleeping bag weights? This is the reason for the event's difficulty and exaggerated terrain.
