This cache is hidden in honour of my late husband, a 30 year veteran of the Canadian Forces and of all other Soldiers who put 'Service Before Self'. Although my husband did not die in combat, he served in many overseas missions in war-torn areas, including Iraq, Kuwait, Croatia, and Bahrain.
There are many song tributes to our Military heroes and one of my favorites is the single HIGHWAY OF HEROES by THE TREWS. According to Wikipedia, it was inspired by the 2006 death of Capt. Nichola Goddard, the first Canadian female soldier killed in Afghanistan and a schoolmate of members of The Trews. They shared the hometown of Antigonish, NS. The Highway of Heroes refers to the stretch of Hwy 401 between CFB Trenton and downtown Toronto, where people gather on the bridges and overpasses to mourn soldiers killed in Afghanistan while the bodies of fallen soldiers are transported from Trenton to the Coroner's Office in Toronto. The song was made available on iTunes in Canada only, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Hero Fund, a charity that provides academic scholarships to the spouses and children of soldiers killed in combat.
"I SERVED WITH DISTINCTION,
NO VISIONS OF GLORY.
I SERVED WITHOUT QUESTION,
OR PERSONAL GAIN.
SEEK NO JUSTIFICATION,
IT'S NOT PART OF MY STORY.
AND IT OFFERS
NO COMFORT TO THE ONES WHO REMAIN."
