#1 From the series ' Chapels in Lesvos '
Jesus the Savior at Ampeliko village:
The chapel is on the top of a mountain. Easy to access through a well reserved dirt road for about a km.
The chapel is dedicated to the Jesus Christ the savior, and it is known with the name "Sotira".
The view worth's the visit and the sunset is fantastic. (So don't take for granted that Santorini has the most beautiful sunset in Greece we also have romantic places !)
Your starting way point should be N39 03.629 E026 18.357. Just go up through the pine trees...
From this way point starts also a path to the SE, and you have the opportunity to walk down the "resin collectors path".
This was for many centuries the only road to connect with the internals of the island, like the Great lake and the small but rich valleys in between.
It's name comes from the pine-tree resin collectors, who by using donkeys and mules where harvesting this precious stuff.
We know that driving and ouzo are not your best friends when used together but you may try some lighter edition at Ampeliko village SE of the chapel. At least the water of that ouzo has never been chlorinated. It is plain-pure-clean mountain water !
Ο Χριστός Σωτήρας του Αμπελικού:
Το εκκλησάκι είναι στην κορυφή του βουνού. Έχει όμως εύκολη πρόσβαση με ένα καλά διατηρημένο χωματόδρομο, περίπου ένα χιλιόμετρο από την κεντρική άσφαλτο.
Γνωστό με το όνομα Σωτήρα (θηλ.) στην γύρω περιοχή.
Ο χωματόδρομος αρχίζει από το N39 03.629 E026 18.357 και τον ακολουθείτε προς τον Νοτιά. Από το ίδιο σημείο ξεκινά και το μονοπάτι της ρητίνης. Το μονοπάτι αυτό ήταν ο πλέον χρησιμοποιούμενος 'δρόμος' γιά την πρόσβαση προς το εσωτερικό του νησιού - όπως την περιοχή της Μεγάλης λίμνης - και τις εύφορες πεδιάδες που υπήρχαν στην περιοχή.
Το όνομα δόθηκε προς τιμήν των χιλιάδων ανθρώπων της περιοχης, που το περπατούσαν καθημερινά, για να εργαστούν σαν ρητινοσυλέκτες. Το πεύκο της Λέσβου ανήκει σε μια κατηγορία που δεν απαντάται συχνά -μαυρόπευκο επιστ. Μαύρη πεύκη - P. nigra - και περιέχει μεγάλυτερη ποσότητα ρητίνης απο τα άλλα είδη, κάνοντας την εργασία αυτή ιδιαίτερα προσοδοφόρα.
Προφανώς ,γνωρίζετε οτι το ουζο και η οδήγηση δεν είναι φίλοι σας οταν συνδυάζονται! Αλλά μπορείτε να πιείτε όσο νερό θέλετε απο τις βρυσες του χωριού που βλέπετε στα Ανατολικά της κρύπτης. Μεχρι τώρα το νερό αυτό δεν έχει χρειαστεί να χλωριωθεί, όντας φυσικό καθαρό και αγνό.
