Il Cassero (dall'arabo qasr, castello, castrum romano) è il monumento che segna ufficialmente la nascita di Castel San Pietro nel 1199. L'iniziativa venne dal Comune di Bologna che, nello stesso periodo, fece edificare numerose fortificazioni a difesa dei propri confini. Il castrum di San Pietro fu posto al confine con il territorio di Imola, all'epoca città ghibellina, mentre Bologna era una città guelfa.
Fu realizzato dapprima in legno e poi trasformato più volte a seconda delle esigenze delle milizie che, secolo dopo secolo, lo hanno conquistato e utilizzato quale baluardo principale contro i nemici, fino ai primi anni del 1500, quando Bologna e Imola passarono sotto lo Stato Pontificio e Castel San Pietro perse definitivamente la sua funzione militare.
A partire dal 1734 si trova un primo documento dove si parla del teatro tutt’ora presente all'interno del Cassero. Il teatro venne ristrutturato nel 1830. Usato come alloggio militare durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, nel 1916 fu colpito da un fulmine e quindi fu indispensabile un nuovo intervento di ristrutturazione.
Oggi il Cassero è un simbolo caro agli abitanti di “Castello” (così chiamano la loro città) e rimane un punto di riferimento per molte iniziative della città. La torre dell'orologio viene spesso illuminata con colori particolari o disegni in occasione di eventi. Al di sotto del Cassero, nel passaggio pedonale, è presente un’edicola storica che tutti i castellani conoscono.

The “Cassero” (qasr in Arab, castle, the Roman castrum) is the monument that officially marks the foundation of Castel San Pietro in 1199. The initiative came from the Comune of Bologna, which built many other fortifications in the same period to defend its borders. The castrum of San Pietro was placed at the border with the territory of Imola, which was a ghibelline city, while Bologna was a guelf city.
The Cassero was initially built with wood and then transformed many times according to the needs of the different militias that conquered and used it as a stronghold against enemies until 1500, when Bologna and Imola became part of the Papal States and Castel San Pietro lost definitively its defensive function.
Starting in 1734, we find documentation about a theatre still present inside the Cassero. The theater was restored in 1830. It was used as military accommodation during the First World War, and then restored and modified again after being struck by a lightning in 1916.
Nowadays, the Cassero is a precious symbol to the inhabitants of “Castello” (as they call their city), and a reference point of several public initiatives. The clock tower is often illuminated with particular colors or pictures, especially at events. Under the Cassero, in the pedestrian walkway, an historical newsstand is present, known to every “castellano” (the inhabitants of Castello).
