22.marec bol vyhlásený ako Svetový deň vody v roku 1992 Valným zhromaždením OSN na Konferencii v brazílskom meste Rio de Janeiro. Svetový deň vody sa teda oslavuje počnúc rokom 1993 v súlade s odporučeniami Konferencie OSN o životnom prostredí a rozvoji. Členské krajiny boli vyzvané, aby tento deň venovali konkrétnym aktivitám, ktoré podporia informovanosť verejnosti o nenahraditeľnom význame vody - napríklad organizovaním konferencií, okrúhlych stolov, seminárov a výstav zameraných na ochranu tejto tekutiny a jej zdrojov a uplatňovanie odporúčaní Agendy 21. - Akčný program UNCED - na Konferencii OSN k životnému prostrediu a rozvoju z júna 1992 v Riu de Janeiro a vytýčili konkrétne aktivity na úrovni svojho štátu.

The 22nd of March was declared as World Water Day in 1992, by the General Assembly of the UN at the Conference in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. WWD is celebrated each year since 1993, in accordance with the recommendations of the UN Conference on Environment and Developmnet. Member States were invited to devote the Day to specific activities that promote public awareness of the irreplaceable importance of water - for example, by organizing conferences , roundtables , seminars and exhibitions aimed at protecting the liquid and its resources, and implementation of the recommendations of Agenda 21 - Action program UNCED - United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro , and set out a specific activity level of their state.
