Denville defies the odds in 21st century America. The old downtown is thriving despite the difficult on-street parking and lack of national franchises. Some may argue it is thriving because of the lack of homogenized stores. Either way, the collection of long-standing family-owned businesses is something that is not seen as much anymore.

During Hurricane Irene in August 2011, the Rockaway River surged over its banks and took a heavy toll on the downtown area. Many of the businesses suffered significant damage and were closed for months to rebuild. The town came together to help and support the businesses as they got back on their feet. Fortunately, the vast majority were able to re-open and welcome back their loyal customers. You can see the Irene water line memorialized on a number of the restored buildings.

The clock tower and mini-park where the cache is located is another example of the community pulling together for a common goal. Enjoy the downtown area and pick up a smiley, everybody wins!
