Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden in the Coranderrk Cementary.  while 300 burials are recorded here there are very few grave sites left.  One of those belongs to william Barak.  The last elder of the Yarra Yarra tribe.

Coaranderrk was a reserve for Aboriginal people that where displaced by the arrival of European settlers.  There had been attempts to set up reserves on the other side of the Great Dividing Range, but none of these worked due to problems with European settlers.  In March 1863 Simon Wonga and Barak led a group of Wurundjeri, Taungurong (Goulburn River) and Bun warrung people over the Black Spur and squatted on a traditional camping site at Badger Creek (Healesville Sanctuary).  Soon people from other Aboriginal Nations where forced to this area, making an interesting cultural mix.
