Geocache Description:

Grab this on the way up, or way down. A tricky spot to zero-out coordinates due to the steep slope. Be patient. The cache is about 3 yards from the road/trail, on the upslope side. No need to bushwhack. Besides the chaparral pea, this area is abundant in other lovely native plants, including soap root lily, ceanothus, chaparral honeysuckle, mustang mint, yerba santa, toyon and foothills penstemon.

CHAPARRAL PEA (Pickeringia montana)

One of many endemic California plants, chaparral pea is one of the few legumes in the chaparral environment. This shrub is abundant in the few places it seems happy to grow in Nevada County, but there aren't many of those places. It likes hot, rocky slopes. Its magenta-pink flowers bloom in late May.

Enjoy your scenic hike and down Superloaf. Grab a few other nearby caches. You can do them all in about 1 hour.
