Geocache Description:

A cache located just off the very scenic North Down Coastal Path at Smelt Mill Bay, at the bottom of Strickland’s Glen.

Smelt Mill Bay is so-called as lime was burnt here and prepared for building construction purposes, or spread on the fields.

In times past, Quarry Port at the end of Helen’s Bay beach was used to unload lime from luggers, which had sailed across Belfast Lough from quarries on the Antrim coastline. There may have been a bigger track running from Quarry Port along the coast to Smelt Mill Bay,

During the second world war a long-gone boatyard flourished here.

Further information on this area can be found in the publication 'Twixt Bay and Burn' published by the Bayburn Historical Society. This book can be bought in local bookstores and is also available as a free download at this link: Twixt Bay and Burn

The Cache

The cache itself is a screwtop camouflaged micro container containing a logbook only. Look out for the old Victorian 'stink pipe' / 'stenchpole' hiding in the trees nearby. More information on these can be found at https://londonist.com/2016/08/the-victorian-structures-hidden-in-plain-sight
Have fun locating!

Congratulations to Halywid Hunters on getting the FTF!.
