Geocache Description:



Semi-circular Ball Bay is most probably the eroded remnant of a maar (a crater formed by a shallow explosive eruption caused when the underground magma invaded the groundwater table).  The sea has eroded away the southeast half of the crater.  The remaining crater walls form a steep, almost vertical escarpment 80-100m around the bay.

Ball Bay was named after Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, command of HMS Supply, who had assisted Lieutenant Governor King in exploring Norfolk’s coast and finding a suitable landing site in March 1788.

Ball Bay has played an important role in the development of Norfolk Island.  In 1937 the land in this area was proclaimed as a reserve for the purposes of recreation, landing and shipping.

A local whaling industry was established in Ball Bay in the latter half of the 19th century and whaling ships from America and Europe often visited Norfolk Island.

In World War II, United States military engineers constructed a short pile jetty and slipway to unload military machinery, construction equipment for the Norfolk Island airport and supplies.

Today Ball Bay is where the Island’s bulk fuel supplies come ashore.  Petrol, diesel and jet fuel are pumped through a floating pipeline to the bulk fuel depot.  Bulk gas is also pumped ashore to the gas terminal.  A small oil tanker and a bulk gas tanker service Norfolk Island regularly.

To access this cache either follow the trail just below the fence on Martins Road 100m East of the intersection of Stockyard, Marshes & Martins Roads or a steep climb up the hill from the Ball Bay Lookout just past the Bulk Fuel Terminal
