Geocache Description:

This is a fun caching series set in various locations around Southport to commemorate our five national sporting treasures, Football, Rugby, Cricket, Golf and Tennis. With varying levels of difficulty.

Southport (Rugby) Football Club was founded on November 29th 1872 and is one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in the world. The Mayor of Southport, Samuel Swire, was the first President. In line with the origins of the modern game it was originally composed of Old Public School Boys and was formed with the intention of “improving the physical development of our young townsmen”. The club was one of several playing the handling code in the town, and other teams under the titles Southport Olympic, Southport Wasps, Southport Hornets and The Grasshoppers are recorded.

The first ground is recorded as being a large field next to the Alexandra Cricket Club in Manchester Road. In 1881, after some heavy defeats, Southport (Rugby) Football Club switched to association football. Most of the rugby players turned to the round ball game, and with a lack of new recruits the original club faded out. Southport Olympic completely reformed at Victoria Park, Southport and rejoined the Lancashire County Rugby Football Union in 1906. In April 1913, a proposal to drop the Olympic name in favour of Southport Rugby Union Football Club was carried at a general meeting.
The year 1926 saw the start of the last season at Victoria Park, and on 26 March 1927 the club celebrated the opening of the new ground at Waterloo Road with a victory over Preston Grasshoppers. The Club still play at the Waterloo Road ground and have several senior teams, over 50’s, Southport Ladies, Juniors and mini’s.

Waterloo Road Recreation field is extremely busy with junior football on a Sunday morning and the cache may be difficult to access at this time.
