The Ngarrindjeri people who are the traditional owners of the lower Murray River believe that a species of water monster or Bunyip called Mulgewongk inhabits the Coorong lakes and lower river.
The Mulgewongk live in shallow waters and to lie in wait for their prey, which can include children. The hair on their body looks like water weeds and so they are well camouflaged as they wait, ready to attack.
According to Ngarrindjeri people, Mulgewongk are nocturnal. As a result, Ngarrindjeri people avoid the river and wetlands at night.
Mulgewongk numbers declined following European settlement and so reports of encounters with Mulgewongk declined. It is believed that this is due to habitat destruction, as a consequence of the impact of the paddle steamer industry.
It is important for geocachers to understand that all of the information outlined above is true.
The Ngarrindjeri have passed down stories about the Mulgewongk from generation to generation and may have done so for many thousands of years.
If you search the internet, you will be able to learn more about the Mulgewongk.
This geocache involves exploration of a wetland area of the lower Murray River at night.
You have been forewarned about the Mulgewongk, a ghastly monster that preys on children, which may inhabit this area.
You also know that Mulgewongk hunt at night.
You also know that the geocache involves exploring a wetland area of the Murray River at night. Depending on conditions, it may also involve wading or swimming.
Please be extra cautious as the wetland area is also inhabited by tiger snakes.
This cache is not recommended for children unless they are accompanied an adult.
You have been forewarned about these risks and need to understand that you are undertaking this geocache AT YOUR OWN RISK.
It is rumored that a geocacher has found the secret lair of a Mulgewongk.
This geocache will take you to that secret lair.
It is important to keep the location of the lair secret.
For this reason the starting co-ordinates for this cache are a secret.
The co-ordinates that you need to go to therefore differ from the listed coordinates of the cache but are given as one of the visible waypoints.
You need to visit the shelter at S 35° 08.877 E 139° 18.825 and answer some questions from a small plaque on the shelter, in order to find the starting coordinates for the Mulgewongk’s trail.
The starting point for the trail is;
S35 0A.BC3 E139 1A.A2C
Where;
A = the number or organisational logos on the plaque + the number of bird logos at the top of the plaque
B = A + 1
C = A divided by 2
You will need to use your GPS to navigate to the trail’s starting point.
From this starting point, you will need to use a torch to follow the trail of the Mulgewongk, out into the water.
Be sure to hold the torch close to your eyes and shine it out, close to the water level.
You will need to follow this trail until you get to a sign. We’ll call this the sign of the Mulgewongk.
You will know the sign of the Mulgewongk when you see it. It has animal prints on it.
I think that those animal prints belong to the Mulgewongk.
You will need to use information from this sign to find the Mulgewongk’s lair. The line of foot prints under the heading on the sign are thought to be Mulgewongk prints.
The lair is at;
S35 0D.EEF E139 1G.HGI
Where;
D = The number of COMPLETE Mulgewongk foot prints on the sign (do not include part prints).
E = the number of Mulgewongk pictures on the sign (only count pictures that are labeled as Mulgewongks, if there are none then the answer is zero).
F = the number of PART Mulgewongk foot prints on the sign.
G = The number of COMPLETE Mulgewongk foot prints on the sign – the number of white swan logos on the sign.
H = The number of COMPLETE Mulgewongk foot prints on the sign - the number of PART Molgewongk foot prints on the sign.
I = the number of PART Mulgewongk foot prints on the sign x 2.
Be very careful when you approach the Mulgewongk lair.
Mulgewongks are dangerous and unpredictable. They really are ghastly water monsters.
Be careful where you step and watch that the Mulgewongk doesn’t grab you.
You will also need to be careful not to fall into the water and need to ensure that you don’t get lost in the wetland area whilst searching for the lair.
When you find the lair, you will find the Mulgewongk.
In finding the Mulgewongk you will also find the cache.
Please ensure that you re-hide the cache properly when you have finished, so that it is out of sight, back in the Mulgewonks lair.
You can check your calculation of the final coordinates for this cache using Geochecker.com (visit link)
