Money has recently been found to add mountain bike trails in parts of the forest it has now become a top attraction for bikers, none of the caches are on the "Bike only" trails. A short walking trail has recently been added.
This series of caches should, if you plan correctly, take you on a circular track round the forest, 12.5 mile (20kms) Total assent 1300ft (400metres) @ 4-4½ hours plus search & log time. On forest paths, tarmac roads and gravel tracks. It is possible to cut across other forest tracks for a shorter walk if the weather deteriorates or the total walk is too much. A word of warning, on several of the caches you will have to double back on yourself to navigate the shortest way round the forest, some preparation should be done before starting your journey, the caches have NOT been given numbers on purpose, and remember the nearest cache may not always be the next one to attempt to find. The forest is covered by OSNI map sheet 13 1-50000, you should carry and know how to read it. While Google maps shows the forest roads Openstreetmaps have better maps showing the bike tracks and walking paths.
Mobile phone signals are non-existent in parts of the forest, so it's recommended if you’re caching using a mobile phone you save the caches offline before starting your journey and make sure your phone is fully charged before starting. Please keep to the paths unless otherwise instructed. These caches have been placed to cause as little disruption to the wildlife and environment as possible and close to paths/ forest clearings where GPS signals are least hindered by the trees.
Please ensure you are dressed properly with appropriate footwear and prepared for all conditions, as the weather can change rapidly. Some of the caches are low or on the ground and are not suitable after snowfall. There are two caches already in the area and these can be pursued on the way round.
There may be restrictions on access to parts of the forest from time to time to facilitate forest operations, if so please adhere to safety signage which will be posted for your safety. Please also obey any signage restrictions for bio-security reasons. Game and wildfowl shooting takes place 1st Oct to 31st Jan yearly.
Parking is available at the official trailhead on the Draperstown (north west side) which is locked at dusk. Roadside parking is available on the Cookstown (south east side) for @ 12 cars / vans. Caches have been placed at both locations.
Spoiler photos may be deleted at the cache owner’s discretion
Where no signature is written in the log book further evidence of finding the cache may be asked for, (ie photo of cache container in hand) failure to provide proof of a find may result in the “find” being deleted.
Don’t forget, sometimes the best view is behind you, and remember keep our forests tidy, if you bring it with you, take it home again.
Enjoy your walk
The Cache
This cache is at the alternative parking on the Cookstown side of the forest, its remote so make sure everything is hidden away when parking you vehicle here, Davagh Forest has been here longer than the recent awards and promotions suggest. Recent signage makes it all look new but sometimes an old sign suggests its been a walkers paradise for some time. The cache is a container 1½" long at eye level and could be a cache & dash. Stealth required here as it can be a busy place
