In 1783, the Virginia Assembly passed a public health law that required vessels coming from foreign ports to undergo quarantine if there was suspicion of infectious disease aboard.
This cache is placed as part of the Interpretive ODU Cache Series.
Please use extreme stealth! ODU's campus is heavily populated from 9:00am-6:00pm and there are always events on the weekends.
Beware of muggles!
By 1859, the waters off of Lamberts Point were used as a quarantine ground for ships coming into port.
Although Virginia and other Atlantic port states did their best to enforce quarantine laws, attempts were not consistent and repeat yellow fever epidemics in the United States led to the first federal quarantine legislation in 1878.
