Geocache Description:

This cache, centered, near the Perry Library, was named the legacy cache in honor of the families and individuals that have helped to build Old Dominion University, including Kaufman, Perry, Darden, Whitehurst, and Batten.

This cache is placed as part of the Interpretive ODU Cache Series.
Please use extreme stealth! ODU's campus is heavily populated from 9:00am-6:00pm and there are always events on the weekends.
Beware of muggles!

Old Dominion University was founded in 1930 as part of the College of William and Mary, and officially became Old Dominion College in 1962, and was awarded status as a university in 1969. This cache, centered, near the Perry Library, was named the legacy cache in honor of the families and individuals that have helped to build Old Dominion University, the City of Norfolk, and the Hampton Roads Region into the prosperous area it is today. Old Dominion University has become one of the premier research institutions in Virginia, in large part due to the outstanding members of the community that have contributed their time and energy to help build up ODU. Among these names are Frank Batten (Engineering), Douglas and Patricia Perry ( Perry Library), Albert Gornto (Gornto Teletechnet building), Kaufman (Kaufman Mall), Colgate Darden (Darden School of Education), Ludwig Diehn (Diehn School of Music), and G. William Whitehurst (Whitehurst Hall and Whithurst Beach).
A few interesting facts about some of these people: Frank Batten was a media mogul with a passion for developing programs of higher education. He became the first Rector (ruler) of Old Dominion University. Colgate Darden was a US Representative from Virginia as well as the 54th Governor of the State. G. William Whitehurst was a professor at ODU while it was a part of the college of William and Mary before serving 19 years as a US Representative. Upon his retirement from Congress, he came back to ODU where he continues to teach.

The container is a small and the cache is a micro!
