Geocache Description:

This is our second church micro placement at a beautiful country location. St Mary's Church, Lowdham is a Grade I listed parish church in the Church of England[1] in Lowdham

The church dates from the 13th century but was restored in 1860 by Scott. The spire was repaired in 1883 and the chancel restored in 1890. It is part of a joint parish with: St Aidan's Church, Caythorpe St John the Baptist's Church, Gunthorpe Lowdham means "village by the loud stream", from Old English hlud "loud" and ham "village, homestead". The name was recorded as Lideheme in 1046, suggesting Old English hlid "slope" as the first element, with Old Norse heimr (as in Blenheim), cognate with Old English ham "homestead, village". The old church and the castle mound are to the west of the bypass. St Mary's Church, Lowdham dates back to before the 14th century. To the north east of the bypass is Lowdham Mill. There is now little sign of the frame knitting industry that was important in this area in the 19th century. In 1844 there were 94 stocking frames working in Lowdham
