While scoping out this location (actually, collecting supplies for another hide), I was approached by a DEC LEO. Very nice guy. He said that they've been having problems with trucks tearing up the trails, and my "big tires" raised his eyebrows. He made sure that I knew that I was on DEC land and that permits were required to access it. I showed him the DEC access permit on my windshield, and he told me that I'm supposed to have on on my person. So, I pulled out my wallet and showed him that one also. Thankfully they hadn't expired! As long as you don't look like a dirtbiker, I don't think you'll have any problems with the LEOs. That being said, this location is actually in a "notch" in the land, and not actually within the DEC boundary (according to http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45415.html)
The rail junction just east of here was torn up after Grumman shut down, but it's recently been replaced with new rail.
Mundane fact: When I was a kid, I found a 5-gallon pail full of shotshell primers very close to this spot. I filled up my pockets and took some home, emptied my pockets into a mason jar and kept them on a shelf in my room into my late teens.
