How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

During a CITO event, geocachers search parks, trails and forests to earn a smiley—but they’re not looking for geocaches. They’re clearing litter and trash from geocaching-friendly areas around the world. The 2014 Groundspeak CITO weekend takes place on April 26 and 27.

Anyone who logs an "Attended" at a Cache In Trash Out (CITO) event during this weekend earns an official 2014 virtual souvenir badge for their Geocaching.com profile.

We have a very active geocaching community, but we're lagging when it comes to CITO activities :
  • Over the past 2 years, just 2 CITO events have taken place within 200 kilometres of either Melbourne or Geelong;
  • This is just the second CITO event ever in our region;
  • Although this is Groundspeak's 12th CITO weekend, this will be the first time we participate with a coinciding event.
If you feel it's time to give something back to the community, then consider this event and join us in cleaning up a small part of our waterfront.

WHEN :
Saturday 26th April, from 16h00 to 17h00.
(Low tide is at 17h50.)

WHERE :
The western side of Limeburner's Point, near the Portuguese Explorer bollard. Geelong's earliest limeburning kilns were on these small cliffs.

WHO :
Everyone welcome - geocachers, non-geocachers, muggles.

WHAT :
A short clean-up event, followed by an optional BBQ or dinner (post-cleanup get-together still to be decided).

HOW :
Plastic bags will be provided - if each person can fill one large bag, we'll be making a visible difference.
Some gloves may come in handy, so bring them along and wear them if you have any.
It will be on a much smaller scale than our previous clean-up effort in Fyansford - fortunately the waterfront is a much more visible area which makes it more difficult for people to dump large amounts of rubbish. However, the small litter adds up and mars our enjoyment of the waterfront.
The timing is close to low tide so that we can get down to the beach level as well.
If the number of attendees warrants it, we'll try get Council to provide a skip bin.
If we're in the fortunate position of having a large volunteer force, we can branch out a little further and clean up parts of Eastern Park and Limeburner's Point near GZ.

This event is closely tied with Earth Day, which is held on the 22nd April each year.
The Clean-up Australia day took place recently on the 2nd March 2014, and while much of the Geelong waterfront was cleaned up in that exercise, this area remains in need of some extra attention.
So here's our opportunity to make a difference. It’s easy, and can be fun and rewarding.

As Groundspeak puts it, "Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving parks and other cache-friendly places. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!"
