The small town Alcalá is located at the part of coast which is the nearest one to the island La Gomera (approx. 22 km).
In former times the fisherman of Alcalá went over to La Gomera in small boats for trading.
Alcalá was well-known for the salt, which was produced here in the "salinas" up to 1950. At the place, where the "salinas" terasses were located, now stands the big hotel "Grand Melia".
