Geocache Description:

This cache is located near downtown McCormick at an historical landmark. There is plenty of parking.

The original "fake screw" container has been replaced (5-2021) by a bison tube, because the log in the screw could never stay dry.

This cache is a 2" bison tube, not meant to be hard to find. I just wanted to bring people to this interesting location.

This cache is placed at Heritage Park, site of the entrance to the gold mine that runs under the town.  Although the park itself is enclosed by a fence and only open certain days of the month, this cache is outside of that fence and is accessible 24/7.

Congrats to JHUONI for FTF.

He made the find 16 minutes after the cache was published.

Gotta be a record!!

A LITTLE HISTORY:

In 1852, the second richest vein of gold in South Carolina was discovered in what is now McCormick. The town motto is "We're sitting on a gold mine." In the early part of 1852, William "Billy" Dorn was about to lose his property and possessions through foreclosure when he made his big gold strike and opened the mine. Heritage Park contains the area surrounding the entrance to his mine.

Heritage Gold Mine Park is open May through October on the first and third Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and during the Gold Rush Days Festival, which is the third Saturday in September. It is also open by appointment for groups and tours. (For more information, contact Dave Gray, Park Manager, at (864) 852-2835.)  It's great for groups such as the Scouts, school field trips, church outings, seniors, etc.

When it is open, you can try your hand at panning for gold and gemstones and keep what you find.  If you come when it is not open, you can look through the fence to see the mining trough and further down, the walkway that leads to the mine entrance.  Original features of the mine include the open trench, several pits and vertical shafts, dewatering piping, and a horizontal tunnel, which children love to explore.  The Dorn mine is listed on the National Historic Register.
