The name that the local iwi, Te Kawerau a Maki, gave to the island refers to the cave or tomo through the rock which is used by fisherman to fish off the rocks (Dawson's Ledge). It has been called Rabbit Island, Camel Rock and Goat Island at different times. There was a pa on the Island in two parts, with platform terraces and midden.
Please exercise caution, cliffs about. Island is accessible a few hours each side of low tide. You can get to the island by either walking around the rocks from Piha or up over the hill, via two great lookouts. It's a bit of a scramble up to the cache, and again: beware of the cliffs. Don't bring children.
If you're in the area at low tide, going through the Keyhole and around to the left is worth it, although may result in wet shoes. Competent clamberers only.
Directly South of the island is The Gap, an impressive sight when the waves are large. Farther on is the badly named Piha Blowhole. Worth a look (and an easy to find cache lays waiting for you).
This cache is a camo'd thermos flask (black insulation tape), with plenty of room for Trackables. At the time of hiding it had a pencil, log book, cache note, 'Kobe is Swahili for turtle' TB, yu-gi-oh man, dice, stick on eyes, toy car, a few polished rocks.
