Scouting is concerned with the development of young people, and has a proud history spanning over 100 years. Founded by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in1907, the ideals of Scouting have had a global appeal for the youth of many different generations. At present there are more than 30 million Scouts in 161 countries throughout the world.
The history of Scouting and its basic principles are closely linked with South Africa, with Baden-Powell perhaps being best known for his spirited defense of the small town of Mafeking (now Mahikeng situated in the North-West province) during the Anglo-Boer War in 1899/1900. It was from the boy cadets used during the siege, to run errands and keep watch, that the original idea of Scouting evolved.
