Geocache Description:

The Harrietville 5 - The Traditional Cache

The Harrietville 5 is a series of 5 caches, each of a different type. One Traditional, One Multi Cache, One Unknown, One Letterbox and One Earthcache. The town of Harrietville was chosen as it is one of my favourite little towns and I noticed that it did not have a cache placed in it at the time.

This is the Traditional Cache. The cache is located at the posted co-ordinates. All you need to do is go there and get them. Simple!

I have been coming to Harrietville most years since I was about 4 years old. My parents used to bring me here for holidays when I was young, we would travel from Wycheproof, most of the way across Victoria, to this pretty little spot. We'd camp here and I have fond memories of my dad teaching me how to skim stones on the water. I remember the Harrietville Hotel, now known by another name, which had huge expansive verandahs that used to be shaded by some massive hop vines which have gone now unfortunately. The filtered light through those hop vines kept the place cool and shady on a hot summers day. I remember the family gatherings that we had on that verandah, with beers for the boys and shandies for the girls and lemonade for us kids, they were served to us on those old tin trays that we'd carry to the table.

I remember my older sisters bringing their boy-friends along (who are now their husbands) and I fondly remember coming here with my granddad a few months before he died. When I left home I still came here by myself, it was a getaway for me from university. I remember driving my Datsun 200B over the Dargo highplains from Maffra to Hotham one summer and stopping here for a few nights.

Later my mum rented a cottage for a few years in Wondillagong whilst dad was posted overseas, my sister lived for a brief time in Freeburgh with her family and I remember visiting them and always ducking down to Harrietville for a reminisce and a beer.

These days I bring my own family here, I am teaching my own kids how to skim stones on the water.

The other thing I used to love to do as a kid was to climb trees. So guess where this one is placed! Nothing too difficult mind you. About two meters up, nestled in small cavity, probably covered in leaves. Make sure you replace it as you found it!

Don't forget that the log book for this cache contains the southerly co-ordinates for the unknown cache of this series!
