Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches placed along the Little Miami Scenic Trail (LMST).

There are so many interesting species of trees along the Little Miami Scenic Trail, and this cache is dedicated to (and placed next to) one of those, Black Walnut (Juglans nigra).

Black Walnut typically grows best in deep, rich bottomland soils throughout Ohio. The nuts are both delicious and highly-nutritious. A brown dye was made by Native Americans and pioneers from the thick husks surrounding the nuts.

Many plants cannot grow beneath walnut trees because of juglone (C10H6O3), a poisonous substance given off by the roots of black walnut. This toxin is fatal to such plants as tomatoes, poverty grass, blackberry, heaths, and others.

Black Walnut Leaves, Bark, Flowers, and Fruit

As you travel along the rest of the Little Miami Scenic Trail, watch for these interesting trees. You should have no trouble finding them in the rich bottomland soils along the Little Miami River!

Please leave the letterbox stamp in the cache.
