Geocache Description:

Welcome to The Red Hill Creek Escarpment Valley Earthcache!

Parking is available on Albright Road, and a trail leading towards GZ can be accessed by approaching the forested section near the baseball diamond. Please do not walk too close to the schools on either side of you when accessing the trail, especially during school hours.

Red Hill Valley is a valley in eastern and south-eastern Hamilton. The valley is named after and home to the Red Hill Creek, which flows 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north-east from Albion Falls on the Niagara Escarpment, before bending north-west near the Queen Elizabeth Way and discharging into Hamilton Harbour at Windermere Basin. The name of the area comes from the reddish soil, rich with iron. The valley is estimated to be 1,600 acres (650 ha) in size. The Red Hill Valley was the site of a protracted battle over an expressway through the valley, ultimately constructed in 2007.

This large natural area encompasses much of the re-entrant in the Niagara Escarpment now occupied by Red Hill Creek.

The sedimentary rocks underlying the Red Hill Creek Escarpment Valley range in age from upper Ordovician through to the middle Silurian (460 to 425 million years before present). Below the Niagara Escarpment, red shales of the Queenston Formation are present; these are locally exposed, particularly in bluffs alongside the creek. This area provides an excellent view of the red shales.

To Log This Earthcache:

1. When looking at the bluffs, describe the pattern of the red, and grey shale that you see. How high up is the grey shale from the creek?
2. Cross the creek (bring waders), and run your hand along the bluffs. Describe the texture of the red shale.
3. What evidence do you see of erosion in this area?
4. Post a picture of yourself at, or near GZ! (Optional)

Please send me these answers in an email. All found it logs that are not accompanies by an email will be deleted.

Congratulations to Paul n Susan on the FTF!
