Geocache Description:

This wander through central Wanganui streets introduces you to some of the old buildings and people who played a part in this city’s history.


As it is all on pavements and paved areas it is suitable for wheelchairs as well as push chairs but children will need watching as the walk is on the central city streets.
Park in Ridgeway Street outside the Rutland Hotel. The final will bring you back here.

The Rutland Hotel was first erected in 1849 and destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1868. rebuilt the following year and replaced in 1904. in the early 1990 redeveloped to include retail shops, offices and Rutland Arms an English style pub.

 A Walk along Ridgeway Street across Victoria Avenue to St Hill Street and walk up to the Royal Opera House. This was built in 1899 and was an all timber building designed to commemorate Queen Victoria's reign. It is one of the very few wooded theatres of its size left in the world and was the first theatre in the southern hemisphere to use electric lighting.


B Walk back the way you came and come to the W.H.Watt fountain in the middle of the road.
It was erected in 1881 as a mark of appreciation  to WH Watt who allowed the Westmere Dam to be used as a town water supply. It was removed to Queens park and eventually relocated here in 1993.do not go to the fountain in the middle of the road

C.The next WP takes you up the avenue to the site of the first Anglican Church which was built by Richard Taylor . There you will see the stone which marks the site and commemorates the centuary of the first church built in Wanganui. 1844-1944

DWalking back towards the river you come to J Williams & co. LTD Quality Jewellers. The business remained in the family until the 1990's


E Continuing to walk towards Ridgeway street named after Mr P Ridgway.He was one of the partners of a ____________ firm of Ridgway,Guyton and Earp

F Ridgway Park was created after a fire destroyed several heritage buildings. The bricks form the buildings were donated and used to build the park.


The cache is magnetic. The final is in a high muggle area especially during working weekdays so do take care.Please see that it is well secured so rain does not enter
