This cache brings you to the site of the the township of Yallourn. Yallourn was a purpose built town built between the 1920's to the 1950's to house the workers for the Yallourn power station and open cut brown coal mine ! It was eventually dug up to allow the once State Electricity Commission to access the coal under the township for the generation of Electricity.
During its heyday Yallourn had a population of 5000 and many facilities. There were many shops,a bus service to moe and morwell, sporting ovals, church's,primary, secondary and catholic schools a library, swimming pool and picture theatre. I remember going to the town hall as a kid to see The world championship wrestling with killer kawolski and other famous wrestlers of the 60's and 70's . Often mistakenly the town thought to have been designed by Walter Burley Griffin, who planned Canberra, Australia's capital city, but the town was planned by A.R. La Gerche, the State Electricity Commission's Architect. From this site you will be able to see the town ship field,East field and the new Maryvale field, and both dredgers, 12 and 13 dredger which were built in the 1970's There are picnic tables here so I hope you enjoy you visit to this lookout ! The lookout is generally open from 8 am until 6 pm
