The RNZAF operated 16 BAC Mk 88 Strikemasters (AKA Blunty) from 1972. These replaced the Vampire and were used by 14 Squadron.
The primary role was pilot training but it was also used, appropriately, for ground strike.
Three aircraft were lost in RNZAF service.
Fatigue, costly repairs and design limiting led to the aircraft being retired in 1992 and replaced by the MB-339-CB Aermacchi. Four of the aircraft are used on RNZAF Base Woodbourne for maintenance training.
