This geocache has been placed as part of The Great War - Flanders Mega Event 2014 (more details available here).
In 1915 the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, created a Landships Committee to tackle the problems of trench warfare. After many experiments an agricultural firm, William Foster & Co. of Lincoln, was contracted to build a prototype machine based on some imported American tracks. When these failed the British designers came up with a successful pattern and were fitted to Little Willie. The completed vehicle was running by the end of 1915 but by then a new design was under construction and this would become the prototype for all British heavy tanks in the First World War. Therefore although Little Willie never saw combat and was redundant almost as soon as it was made, it represented a major step forward in military technology.

- British tanks were initially categorized into “males” and “females.” Male tanks had cannons, while females had heavy machine guns.
- Tanks were initially called “landships.” However, in an attempt to disguise them as water storage tanks rather than as weapons, the British decided to code name them “tanks.”

Little Willie (GC513G3)
En 1915, Winston Churchill créa un comité pour imaginer un engin qui soit capable de traverser des tranchées de 1.5 m de large. Après plusieurs tentatives (plus ou moins fructueuses), la compagnie William Foster & Co. fut chargée de construire cet engin. Ils réussirent à fabriquer Little Willie, qui est le premier prototype de char de l’histoire. Little Willie est resté à l’état de prototype et n’a jamais été au combat, mais il représente un bond en avant pour la technologie militaire.
Le saviez-vous ?
- Les chars avaient un prénom masculin s’ils étaient équipés de canons, ou féminin s’ils étaient équipés de mitrailleuses.
- Les chars (tank en anglais) étaient initialement appelés « landships » (bateau des terres). Mais ils furent renommés car les constructeurs essayaient de les camoufler en les faisant ressembler à des réservoirs d’eau (« water tank » en anglais).

In 1915 richtte Winston Churchill een comitÈ op om een voertuig te ontwerpen die in staat was loopgraven van 1.5m breed over te steken. Na enkele (min of meer geslaagde) pogingen werd opdracht gegeven aan het bedrijf William Foster & Co. om dit tuig te bouwen. Ze slaagden erin "Little Willie" te bouwen, het eerste prototype van een tank. "Little Willie" bleef echter een prototype die nooit actie gekend heeft, maar betekende wel een grote sprong vooruit voor de militaire technologie.

- De pantservoertuigen kregen een mannelijke naam als ze voorzien waren van kanonnen, een vrouwelijke naam als ze machinegeweren bezaten.
- De oorspronkelijke naam voor deze voertuigen "landships" was (landschepen) maar ze kregen al vlug een nieuwe naam. De bouwers wilden ze namelijk camoufleren door ze de vorm van watertanks te geven, vandaar de naam tank.
