Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed with permission in south Moorhead. No room for anything but the log, so be sure to bring something to write with.

This is a Challenge Cache in two parts.

Part One: The story

In the late 1700s the French government was looking for money to finance its wars in Europe and many of its leaders were angry that the United States had signed a treaty with Great Britain. The French decided to fund their wars by seizing American merchant ships, which did not sit at all well with President John Adams. President Adams sent three men to restore the peace.

On arriving in France the three men; Elbridge Gerry, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and John Marshall, were told they would not be able to meet with the French Foreign Minister, the Marquis de Talleyrand, until the U.S. gave the French gov’t a low-interest loan and pay the bills the French owed American merchants. Plus, the Marquis demanded a bribe of $250,000 for himself.

The angered diplomats contacted President Adams, the American public opinion toward the French stunk like bad brie and the president started to prepare for war. When asked for details about the incident President Adams did not reveal the names of the French officials, referring to them only as X, Y, and Z. Limited, undeclared war known as the Quasi-War raged, or sputtered, from 1798-1800. And the whole things started over cash? Yes, cash.
