In the late 19th century, female journalists had to work hard to prove themselves as successful as their male counterparts. Elizabeth Jane Cochran, (born in a suburb of Pittsburgh) given the pen name "Nellie Bly" by the editor of a newspaper, proved herself up to the task and more. She traveled around the world just like the fictional character Phileas Fogg in the novel "Around the World in Eighty Days". In her journalistic writings she exposed the horrid conditions of asylums for the insane, which she herself had experienced first hand in an undercover assignment for a New York Newspaper.
