The Marion E. Carl Veterans Memorial is dedicated to Major General, Marion E. Carl, USMC who was born on his family farm near Hubbard. He served in the USMC from 1939 to 1973 as a Marine aviator ace, surviving combat in three wars. He retired in 1973 with 13,000 flying hours, a Navy Cross with two Gold Stars, the Legion of Merit with three Gold Stars, a Distinguished Flying Cross with four Gold Stars and the Air Medal with 13 Gold Stars.
Upon retiring from USMC, Marion returned to his native Oregon. In 1998 at the age of 82, he was shot to death defending his wife from a home invader. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
