Geocache Description:

An easy cache at a small town that no longer exists.

Jackeytown was settled in a natural clearing in the densely forest covered Manawatu. It is named after the area, Tiakitahuna, but that was too difficult to say, so the English settlers badly transliterated it into Jackeytown.

I have not been able to find when it was first settled, however a few meters down Dampney Road is a memorial to David Rowland and his wife, Marara Koroniria, who died here in 1868. There is some evidence to suggest that this area was settled before Palmerston.

In 1878 Jackeytown consisted of only about twenty houses, including some Maori who had bought the land back off the government. There was also a general store, and a metaled road to Tiakitahuna railway station, however the road from Longburn to Bainesse was was not metaled and often muddy up to a metre deep. Rail was the principal transport. Even then, many people in Palmerston did not know of Jackeytown's existence. A single room primary school was erected in 1882, with 24 students, including those from Karere (approx six houses there). By 1908 the town was not much bigger. Alas, information about the place seems to dry up about this date.

Now there is very little evidence of the past, aside from the number of private residences on this road. Dampneys Road used to go straight through, half has now been converted to private land. The oldest house here looks to be dated about 1920.

The cache is hidden at the Dampneys Road cross roads, just past what was the centre of town (the general store). Good Luck!
