Il castello di Schisò

Edrisi, geografo di Ruggero II, nel 1154 descriveva “Al Qusûs” – nome di origine araba che significa torace e da cui deriva l’attuale toponimo Schisò- come un attivo porto commerciale che esportava i prodotti agricoli dell’entroterra e funzionava da scalo nella rotta Messina-Catania. Il Castello di Schisò, ubicato sopra un modesto rilievo formato da una colata lavica di età preistorica, era una costruzione militare che controllava l’accesso alla baia di Giardini Naxos.

La fase più antica del Castello risale all’epoca tardo medievale (secoli XIII-XIV) e di questo periodo rimangono due torri cilindriche a scarpata che fanno ipotizzare un complesso militare quadrangolare fortificato di tipo angioino con quattro torri circolari collegate fra loro da alte mura.

Nel ‘500 il complesso, in seguito agli attacchi pirateschi, venne rimaneggiato: oltre alla costruzione della torre quadrangolare con i beccatelli lavici e al nucleo residenziale oggi visibili dal lungomare, il castello incorporò al suo interno un impianto per la lavorazione della canna da zucchero che veniva prodotta nella zona. Una terza e ultima fase costruttiva si ebbe alla fine dell ’800: quando  la facciata che prospettava sul lungomare venne ingentilita da una serie di balconi secondo una tipologia adottata per i palazzi di civile abitazione. Il primo proprietario di cui si ha notizia, fu nel 1582 don Cesare Statella, nobiluomo catanese; in seguito la proprietà passò prima ai De Spuches, marchesi di Schisò e Gaggi e dopo, verso la metà del 1800 , a Giovanni Conti, ricco borghese di Messina. Il castello successivamente appartenne alla casata dei Lombardo Alonço fino agli inizi del 1900 quando passò alla famiglia Paladino che ancora oggi ne è proprietaria.
