Johnsonburg (the oldest settlement in Elk County), Pennsylvania is 124 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and 115 miles south of Buffalo, New York. It was founded in 1810 in a productive farming and lumbering region. Like many towns in the 1920s and 1930s with organized crime, the borough carried the name of "Little Chicago". Charles Carbone was a member of the Black Hand crime family. Johnsonburg was on the direct route between New York and Pittsburgh. Paper mills were once common here, and Johnsonburg still has the largest paper mill in Pennsylvania today.
