Geocache Description:

This message is from the Nebraska State Historical society which are the land managers for this area.
“Please use caution this area is literally crawling with rattlesnakes, (one of the worst he has ever seen) in the words of a western surveyor who worked on the site for us a few years ago. We expect, of course, that the participants will honor state and federal statutes protecting archeological resources.”

Inselbergs are mounds of rock protruding up above the surrounding landscape. They can be considered the skeleton of ancient hills.

Inselberg comes from the German meaning island mountain. They appear as islands of rock rising up from the generally flat surroundings. These islands are the remaining skeletons of ancient hills and mountains.

Located near present-day Bridgeport, the Courthouse and Jail Rocks are the erosional remnants of an ancient plateau that bisected the North Platte River. The rocks sit at over 4,050 feet above sea level and rise more than 240 feet above nearby Pumpkin Creek.

As the environment dried, the amount of vegetation decreased and the soil eroded away leaving the skeleton of the mountain sticking up out of the desert.
