Geocache Description:

Welcome to Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens’ 2014 Geocaching Adventure!

This year’s interpretive theme, “An Influential Journey,” tells the story of the Seiberling family travels throughout the world. Once again, our education department is offering several new and engaging ways (including geocaching!) for guests of all ages to rediscover the Estate while learning more about Stan Hywet and the Seiberling family.

This year we’ve set out 7 new Traditional caches containing 7 unique & collectable Story Cards that highlight the family’s domestic travels throughout the United States, its territories and Canada. During your own journey to locate all of the hidden caches, you will discover that a family “road trip” in the late 19th and early 20th century took on an entirely different meaning. As you log your finds, let us know how you enjoyed yourself and what you found most interesting about what you discovered along the way. Like the Seiberlings, we’re hoping your journey will be as much fun as the destination. Thanks for visiting and happy trails!

This is Influential Journey #2 ; Yosemite Valley

In February of 1912 the Seiberlings traveled west to visit a relative named Harriet Miles at her ranch near San Diego, California. Along the way they visited Grand Canyon, the Yosemite Valley and Muir Woods. Since there were no coast-to-coast highways at the time, the family probably traveled by train. It was not until 1918 that tourists arriving in Yosemite by automobile outnumbered those coming by train 7 to 1.

You are looking for a pencil-box sized container.  Inside the container is the logbook for you to sign and story cards featuring Yosemite Valley.  If you wish to leave a geocaching Travel Bug that's fine.  As always, please re-hide the geocache where you found it and conceal it well so that the next finders will have the same fun as you.

We are located at 714 North Portage Path, Akron, Ohio 44303. The Main Gate entrance is at the corner of Portage Path and Garman Road. After entering, simply follow the signs to guest parking and to the Carriage House to purchase your admission ticket. Many tour options are available from guided Manor House & Grand Estate tours to Self Guided Grounds tour.

For Geocachers, the best tour is the Self Guided Grounds tour.  This will give you access to the grounds to hunt our geocaches at your own pace. With this tour not only do you get the historic gardens and grounds to explore, you also get access to the Gate Lodge and the Corbin Conservatory (greenhouse).

Please check our main website at http://www.stanhywet.org for more detailed information on admissions and visiting.

Please note, some weekends we have special events going on that may interfere with geocaching due to expected large crowds. Please check our event calendar on our main website if that is a concern.

Open April through December, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is one of the most important remaining examples of an American Country Estate built during the Industrial Age at the turn of the twentieth century. Stan Hywet was home to F.A. Seiberling, co-founder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his family
