Welcome to Pine Glades nature area Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

BugeyBear: Between the muggles and animals this cache has been muggled and trashed too many times in this spot. The only thing I found this time was the log. Time for it to go.

Geocache Description:

Log only so BYOP...becareful not to drop the container and wedge it in its spot tightly so it won't roll away......I actually took a picture of a Gopher Tortoise walking around the parking lot while we were visiting...

The natural area is located just south of the John C. and Mariana Jones Hungryland Wildlife and Environmental Area and is part of the watershed of the Loxahatchee River. It contains five native Florida ecosystems: mesic flatwoods, wet flatwoods, wet prairie, depression marsh, and dome swamp. The lands that make up the site were acquired in a series of acquisitions during the period 1999-2010. State Florida Forever matching funds for three of the acquisitions were provided by the Florida Communities Trust. Extensive site restoration activities to remove invasive nonnative plant species, restore historic sheet flow of water across the site, and restore the pine flatwoods/wet prairie mosaic community in the agriculturally-altered northeastern portion of the site have been completed. The natural area is part of the Northeast Everglades Natural Area. Public use facilities include a paved parking area for ten cars, two buses and eight canoe/kayak trailers off Indiantown Road, a bicycle rack (bicycles are not permitted on the trails), three kiosks with educational exhibits, an accessible nature trail leading to a covered observation platform and a fishing pier (catch and release only), over 7 miles of natural-surface hiking trails, including a 0.6-mile restored portion of the historic Old Wire Trail from the 1850's, an accessible canoe/kayak launch, covered picnic area and a wheelchair-accessible portable restroom. There is no drinking water on the natural area.
