Il Fantasma e il Cervo
L’Eremo di Montesenario si trova a quota 815 m a circa 20 km da Firenze, vicino a Bivigliano, nel luogo dove si ritirarono i “Sette Santi Fondatori”nel 1234 su un terreno donato dalla famiglia ghibellina degli Ubaldini che avevano il castello poco lontano (ora distrutto). Signore di Montesenario era Ubaldino della Pila, famoso per essere un gran ghottone, Dante lo pone in Purgatorio tra i golosi (Canto XXIV). Morì in una circostanza sfortunata, aveva ricevuto l’Imperatore Federico I Barbarossa, con cui era andato a una caccia al cervo nel bosco di Montesenario. I due seguivano un grande maschio e Ubaldino afferrò l'animale per le corna affinché l'imperatore a cavallo potesse trafiggerlo. Impressionato da tanto coraggio il Barbarossa gli donò il trofeo del cervo che fu appeso all’architrave della porta del castello. Una settimana dopo, mentre Ubaldino usciva a cavallo, il trofeo cadde sulla testa del povero Ubaldino che morì. Ora si narra che talvolta nelle notti di luna piena si vede un fantasma di un cavaliere che si aggira nel bosco di Montesenario: è Ubaldino che cerca il suo cervo!
La cache è nel bosco a circa 1 km dal convento; dal parcheggio oltrepassare un cancello (accesso libero alle persone, proibito alle auto) prendere il sentiero numerato “00”, quindi il sentiero "21".
The Ghost and the Deer
The Monastery of Montesenario is at the altitude of 815 m about 20 km from Florence, near Bivigliano, in the place where the “Seven Holy Founders” retreated in 1234 on a ground given from the ghibelline family of Ubaldini that had a castle not far (now destroyed). Lord of Montesenario was Ubaldino Ubaldini della Pila, well-known to be a big glutton, Dante puts him in Purgatorio among the greedy people (Canto XXIV). He died in an unlucky circumstance, he welcame the Emperor Frederick I Redbeard in his castle; one day they went hunting deers in the forest of Montesenario. The two followed a large male and Ubaldino grabbed the animal by the hartshorn so that the Emperor on horseback was able to run him through with his sword. Impressed for such courage the Emperor gave him the trophy of the deer that was hung up to the architrave of the castle gate. A week after, as Ubaldino went out on horseback, the trophy fell down on the head of the poor Ubaldino killing him. Now people say that sometimes in the nights of full moon you could see a ghost of a knight roaming in the forest of Montesenario: it’s Ubaldino looking for his deer!
The cache is in the forest about 1 km from the cloister, starting from the parking go beyond a gate (free access to the persons, forbidden to the cars) take the footpath numbered “00” first, after the number "21".
